Pony Drive 2004

Organizer David S. Turnbull

Pony Drive for 2004
to celebrate the 40th Anniversary!

This is our current schedule for the PONY DRIVE 2004.

Event Schedule

October 19 2002-- OFFICIAL WEB SITE LAUNCHED!
.

PONYDRIVE.US

We are pre-registering for the Pony Drive to give us an idea as to how many we may expect to participate. Each registrant will receive a registration number that will be their ID number. This will be on the license plate, jackets, ID cards, and other items that we are working on. Numbers will be assigned according to the time that the registration is received on the web site.

The numbers 1-10, 350, 500, 1964-2004 will be auctioned off at a later date with a portion of the proceeds going to a number of charities that we will identify later (such as the Mustang Museum, Shelby’s Children Foundation, and an MCA charity.)

I am letting as many organizations and clubs know of the launch prior to the June 15th date, so that you can pass the word out to as many of your members as possible.

As I contact more people and businesses, the response has been very positive and enthusiastic. Each week, we are able to add more events and activities to the Pony Drive. This will truly be an event of a life-time and I hope everyone will be able to spend at least a day with us. Many will come for a short time, and stay longer once they see what we are doing.

Update October 12, 2001

We just spent a fantastic week with the Mustangs in Motion group, traveling from San Antonio to the MCA show in Commerce. The weather was great, the company awesome and the show a lot of fun!! This was only an example of what will be in store for everyone in 2004. Plans are moving along and a lot of ideas and programs are being explored. We are beginning to contact sponsors to get them involved. A driving event is in the works for portions of the Pony Drive. We are trying to plan shows for the middle and end of the Drive, as well as one in Mustang, Ok., the home of some really friendly people!!

I have made some changes to the route, specifically planning a stop in Lubbock, Texas to visit the Buddy Holly Museum. I met with numerous groups during our trip to and from San Antonio, experiencing enthusiasm at every visit. The Mobile, Ala. group will have lunch for us at the Battleship Alabama Park, Baton Rouge will show us their city, and Beaumont  will have a special welcome for us, and the Washington, DC club is working on events for us. I had the opportunity to meet members from all over in Commerce, specifically members from Mexico, Venezuela, Denmark, Germany, and various US clubs.

Jim McFarland, of Mustangs in Motion has helped with a lot of ideas to make the trip work more smoothly. We will also work with them to plan MIM trips TO Charlotte from the Southwest, Northwest, and Northeast US. For many, this will enable them to make a round trip with a mustang group.

For any of you that I have not heard from, please let me know if your club is able to help plan events for your stop. Even if we only pass thru your location, there are many things that can be done for the participants as we pass by. Even something as simple as having a group by the roadside as we go by can be a lot of fun. Join in for a few miles to get the feel of traveling with a large group of fellow Mustangers.

We are starting to get to the stage where we would like to start counting who is interested in going on the Drive, whether for a short portion or for the long haul. We particularly would like to hear from the Europeans if they are planning on coming over. This is with or without a car. And if you are going for 8 weeks or only a part of the trip. This is not asking for commitments, just an initial "head count." For the Europeans, if some of the sponsors come thru like we hope, this trip could cost what the 1989 trip cost, or possibly less. By contacting a wide range of sponsors, we hope to cut costs for everyone throughout the trip. With large numbers of participants, we'll have even more leverage with discounts and special programs. Having fun is "Job #1", keeping costs down is "#2". With the huge membership of MCA and local clubs, we'd like to hear from any of you that have contacts or are in a position where we can work with your organization for these sponsorships and discounts. By working together, #1 and #2 will be successful.

(For Europeans only)
We're also going to have a program for the Euro cars to get them ready. I think it'll be cheaper to do the work here, instead of there. Each owner will have the option of preparing his cars for the long trip, be we will be requiring all cars to have tune-ups, plugs, points, oil changes, belts, hoses, brakes, tires, etc. We're trying to get sponsors to donate a lot of these parts, to try and keep costs down for europe guys. I have a Ford dealer that we will approach for storing the cars. They will be guarded and the dealer benefit is that a lot of people will want to come see them.

We'll have tour guides and lot of maps.
David

All of this is subject to the area clubs and groups willingness to put on shows that weekend. The definite show is the 40th Anniversary show @ Charlotte. This is due to working with MCA and the feeling that this show should be close to the April 17th date. This will allow those at the show from the West & SW to possibly travel with us as they go home. From Charlotte, we can carry the 40th enthusiasm across the country. I am in the process of contacting as many people as I can and their clubs along the route to see if they are interested in such a venture. The idea is to have a show each weekend with sightseeing during the week. This way, anyone can join and have a real vacation. There won't be a rush to get to the next point, as some are only 100 miles apart. This gives everyone a chance to sightsee and really enjoy the areas visited.
Each of you that I am contacting is asked to submit any questions, ideas, suggestions, criticisms, and offers to assist. This will be a major undertaking and will need all the help available. As I receive these comments, I will start to fine tune the route and times. Each stop is predicated on the local club wanting a visit and willing to work on a major show. Thank you for anything you can add or anyone willing to work with me on these plans.
